What is a Delegate Report?

Perhaps the best way to start is to ask “What is a Delegate?

As a Union Carpenter you are a member of a “Local” (local 1503). Your Local  belongs to a “Regional Council” (Pacific North West Regional Council of Carpenters). Your “Regional Council” is part of a “District Council” (Western District) Your “District Council” is part of the “United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America” (U.B.C.J.A. or sometimes UBC)

Each Local elects Delegates to represent them at quarterly meetings of the “Regional Council” (Pacific North West Regional Council of Carpenters). The Delegates elect an Executive Secretary Treasurer (E.S.T. Evelyn Shapiro) who represents us to the “District Council”(Western District Council)

The District Vice President (Randy Thornhill-Western District Vice President) sits on the “General Executive Board” of the “United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America”

The “General Executive Board” of the “United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America” consists of General President, General Vice President, Second General Vice President, General Secretary-Treasurer, and one District Vice President from each District.

The General President, General Vice President, Second General Vice President, General Secretary-Treasurer, are all elected by Delegates (elected by the members at a Local election specifically for this purpose) at the International General Convention, held every 5 years. (August 2020)

Whew! You really read all that? Good for you!

All this information is written in the UBC Constitution and as a Union Carpenter you should consider it your duty to read this document page to page at least once. It took me a long time and I will admit the first time I read it, it made little sense to me.

I look forward to those of you that will find the errors in my description above, and ask only that you site page, section, and line to back up your challenge. (let the research begin J)

So what is a Delegate?

A Delegate is a Union Carpenter willing to volunteer to represent their local. A Delegate is a member willing to attend meetings, and become involved in the management of their Union. A Delegate is a member willing to be the eyes, ears, and mouth of the members of their Local, to the Council that makes our Union strong.

What is a Delegate Report?

A statement, written or verbal that reflects what the Delegate saw, heard, did and said, on behalf of the members that chose them.

Unity, Strength, Solidarity!
